I've heard that an exercise where you twist your spine or bend over is not good for those with osteoporosis. Is that something that should be avoided?

Members shared mixed guidance on whether twisting exercises are safe for people with osteoporosis, with some reporting that their doctors or consultants advised avoiding all twisting and forward bending due to fracture risk, while others said their physical therapists approved gentle rotation as safe. Several members described low-impact alternatives they rely on, including squats, calf raises, light hand weights, pool noodle exercises during hydrotherapy, and yoga stretches, emphasizing the importance of weight-bearing movement without giving in to mobility aids. A recurring theme was the need to check with your own physician or physical therapist first, as recommendations vary widely based on individual bone health and risk factors.

I was told by my consultant not to bend over or do twisting movements because of my osteoporosis and the risk of further damage.

I don't do lots, but if I am standing in the kitchen I do squats and lift up on to my toes, and use light weights to do sitting exercises to strengthen my arms, use it or lose it, and I am trying not to give in to using a rollator instead of sticks 😊

I think any exercises like that might be risky! After the last year I had I'm very cautious with moving like that! I'm probably over-cautious. Check with your physician first!!
