Unable To Take Oral Alendronic Acid Due To Stomach Pain, can Anyone Tell Me If They Were Able To Tolerate Injections Without Pain

A MyOsteoTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am very concerned as my spine is in a bit of a mess ,I have multiple fractures in upper spine,as stated unable to take oral Bisophenates, due to stomach pain, I was wondering if anyone else was the same and went on to tolerate one of the injections, if so which is the least toxic, as I have lots of intolerances.

Members rallied around someone seeking alternatives to oral bisphosphonates for severe spinal fractures and stomach pain, with the overwhelming recommendation being annual infusions of Reclast or Zoledronic acid, which many found easier to tolerate than daily oral medications. Several members shared their positive experiences with these yearly infusions, noting minimal side effects beyond occasional rashes or flu-like symptoms, though one member cautioned about experiencing a stroke shortly after treatment and feeling dismissed by doctors who wouldn't confirm the connection. A recurring theme was the frustration of managing osteoporosis with medications that often create new problems, the importance of self-advocacy when doctors minimize concerns, and the comfort found in combining medication with supplements, diet, exercise, and hope for stronger bones.

Zolendronic acid and Reclast are the same thing - different countries have different names for it.

I had my first injection a few weeks ago because of stomach issues as well. I have GERD and an ulcer so I’m sure that didn’t help. I had no problems with the injection at all. I am on Prolia.

Hi, Sylvia, Sorry you are struggling. I took Alendronic acid for a year and suffered with horrible heartburn and acid reflux. I kept agitating about something else and saw a new consultant who prescribed Zoledronic acid infusion. It takes about 20 minutes once a year. I was considered a good candidate as I had no other side effects apart from the stomach ones. Maybe you could enquire about it. I have had two infusions and should get one more then another DEXA scan to see if I am mended.... Well, I can always hope. Good luck!

I’ve had two annual infusions of Reclast and now only have Osteopenia. I also take a lot of supplements, prunes, Kefir, Greek yogurt, a healthy diet, exercise, hydrotherapy, mindfulness and meditation. No idea which has helped most!
I do have a prickly heat rash that doctors say is not connected but I wonder...
