I see the Endochrinoligist at the Sunshine Coast Hospital about the Osteoporosis and other medical conditions like Diabetes type 2 also bone and joint problems including OsteoArthritis and Scoliosis of the right side of my back. I have a once every 2 years Bone Density test and the Endochrinoligist advised me to continue taking the Aledronic Acid with Caliciferol and Vitamin D tablet on Friday morning as there had been an improvement in my Lumbar spine bone area. I have Post-Menopausel Osteoporosis. My Gyn. sent me to a Rheumatologist. I am now under his care for treatment. Hope that helps!

I like my primary care physician, but when she prescribed fosomax, we had no discussion about it whatsoever. I told her that I wasn't very comfortable starting this medication, and would like to discuss alternatives, including AlgaeCal. She honestly said that she typically prescribed meds in that class, and for anything else she would refer me to an endocrinologist. I wasn't aware that they managed osteoporosis care either, but I guess that is the case. Others have been referred to rheumatologists, which was also surprising to some of my friends and acquaintances. I thought perhaps the direction that these referrals go may be related to whether or not one has another diagnosis that is typically treated by those specialists. I don't know, but I'll ask when my appointment comes in a month!

I would have a hard time with a PC who had a hard time referring me to a specialist. Back in my day they were called GP's- General Practitioners. These doctors are not trained in any sub-specialties & for them to get annoyed is totally unprofessional & out of line. Who's best interest do they really have at heart? Certainly not their patients! On the other hand, my PCP, the first thing he does is want to send me to a specialist which can get really annoying because I know I don't need one & usually don't go. If your PC. is useless ask your gyn. they are the ones who usually start sending you for Dexa scans any way. My Rheumatologist was referred to me by my gyn. & I love him.
