Rib Popping

A MyOsteoTeam Member asked a question 💭
Birkenhead, UK

I do feel a bit silly asking this but I am hoping someone on here will have experienced the same thing. Today while bathing the dog I overstretched and felt my lower rib “pop”. Now 6 hours later I’m in a lot of pain with it. This has also happed once before when I leaned over to put something into my supermarket trolly and the same popping sound. The pain lasted for weeks and felt similar to when I had badly bruised ribs years ago. My question is, is this something related to my… read more

I suffer with fractured ribs regularly which they put down to my osteoporosis. It is incredibly painful and they can take a while to heal. Mine can go just by bending over!

Yes! My ribs crack with a pop very easily due to my osteoporosis. I had to have a breast MRI (negative btw) and my rib popped where the lip of the bed was pressing on it. Very painful for two weeks. Tender to the touch for 6 more weeks. The cracks are hairline and heal well, but it does hurt!

I have had this the immediate pain is awful. I have suffered this so many times, when someone has just given me a bear hug and when I have caught my ribcage climbing down from something. My GP initially diagnosed a fractured rib which did heal like a fractured rib...took about 6-8 weeks for pain to ease. I find during that time, I cannot breathe easily, cannot lie down without agonising pain, coughing hurts and any upper body movement. I took to strapping my rib cage with bandage, because it was the only relief I got. Though, as a Nurse, I know this is definately not recommended because it may bring on pneumonia and other issues. In the end, I have to do what I do, as no doctor or health adviser could offer any advice. I thought that I may have a dislocating rib, as it always seems to be the same rib effected, my bottom rib on right side at front and I could feel the popping or clicking noise when it happens. Thankfully, have not had this happen for about 2 years.
Hope this helps, at least, I now know that I am not alone on this issue.
