Are You Frustrated With Finding Effective Treatments For Osteoporosis?
I just posted this answer under a different question but I believe it is more appropriate for this one, so I'm copying most of it here.
I also was not satisfied with the options I was given to treat osteoporosis. I had watched my bone density decrease gradually from normal to osteopenia over the past 25 years even though I regularly hiked, lifted weights, and practiced yoga, among other activities, until I finally received my spinal osteoporosis diagnosis in 2022. I did not want to take bone drugs, so researched other treatments and found several small studies that showed high intensity resistance and impact training, done progressively and with professional instruction, could safely build bone even after menopause, and even after previous osteoporotic fractures.
So I hired a personal trainer, learned the proper techniques, and started doing compound resistance exercises that loaded my spine with progressively heavier weights (back squats, deadlifts, overhead carries, and farmers' carries mainly). After nearly 2 years of twice weekly workouts, I had another bone scan earlier this year, and sure enough, my spinal bone density had dramatically improved (from -2.5 to -1.3) and I no longer had osteoporosis. My rheumatologist refused to believe these results could be real and sent me for a spinal x-ray to see if maybe I had developed arthritis with calcium deposits that artificially inflated the bone density, but the x-ray showed no arthritis.
I realize that it's not feasible for everyone with osteoporosis to take this path -- it's not easy, it's kind of scary, and it's certainly not cheap --but I think people should be aware of the possibilities. Your body builds new bone only when your bones are put under significant stress, and the only way to do that is to use a lot of force. Being past menopause does not change that dynamic. Hiking and moderate weight lifting with machines, as I did for years, is simply not enough force for your bones to change. Note that I never would have tried to do the compound lifting with free weights on my own without the guidance of a professional. And I realize that my osteoporosis was not that bad yet, so I don't know if the training that I did would be possible to do with much more advanced disease. But people should know that the old scientific consensus that it's not possible to build bone after menopause but only to preserve what bone you already have, is simply false. I hope in the future there is a way to train more people to be able to do these exercises before they develop severe osteoporosis and the terrible symptoms that accompany it.
So sorry for your pain and health issues. I also have osteoporosis and have taken FOSAMAX on and off. I have completely stopped taking it now, as it didn't seem to help and I'm concerned about side effects the drug may cause.
I now take raw calcium and magnesium. A pharmacist told me that calcium is constipating and magnesium citrate will help bowel movements. There are many types of magnesium, but magnesium citrate is easiest on the stomach. I've been on this regimen for about 7 years and my bone scans indicates certain areas have increased in bone density. I'd rather keep this natural regimen than take medication or have iv injections--once you take the injections, medication is in your system and cannot stop side effects.
Thanks to everyone for sharing what has helped with your osteoporosis. I will look into Frankensence oil. I am also going to research about Algae Cal Plus and Strontium. I don’t like the side affects I’ve read on the Fosamate so I am definitely up for something that is natural that works! Take care and I pray everyone has lots of pain free days or at least tolerable days! ❤️
I cannot believe all of you people are still putting chemicals in your body! I thought everyone on this site was taking algae cal plus and strontium! OMG! Stop putting chemicals in your body or you will have major problems later on. Reclast? Two days after I had my infusion of Reclast, I suffered a stroke. The side effects to Polia is stroke as well. I began taking AlgaeCal Plus along with Strontium almost 3 years ago and my bones have improved drastically. I have gotten so I cannot wait for another DEXA scan just to see where I am on the osteoporosis scale. I feel great! There are no side effects to taking these two supplements because they are all natural. Fosamax? Boniva? These are all medications from the past. Don’t take them!
