Molar Tooth Extraction On Fosamax ?
Hello All . Has anyone ever had a molar tooth (sigh) extracted while take Fosamax ? If so what did you do and did you have any problems afterwards ?
Thanks , Janetta
Good morning Janetta. I am not on Fosamax but I do receive Prolia injections every 6 months. I had a dental crown on a molar and it failed after 25 years. There was not enough good tooth structure left to replace the crown so my dentist said the tooth needed to be extracted. As I'd had my regular Prolia injection only a few months before the crown failure, my dentist recommended that we wait a couple of months before doing the extraction. There was not enough tooth structure left above the gum line for the dentist to get a good grip on the tooth so he drilled the root out bit by bit taking great care to maintain as much bone as possible. The procedure went well and for the next several weeks I returned to his chair for a quick weekly check-up to monitor the healing progress. At the 6 week point following extraction the dentist ordered a follow-up x-ray to have a look for any potential problems that might have arisen. Everything was good. I had no complications and per my dentist's recommendations I did not receive the next Prolia injection which was due following the extraction but instead waited a further 6 months for the Prolia needle. I remember the dentist instilling in my head that if I felt something was not feeling right following the extraction that I must come in immediately to see him. I felt very confident that he was well aware of potential complications regarding dental procedures and medication treatments for osteoporosis. I hope everything goes well for you. 🙂
Hello Oniemae . I had my wisdom tooth pulled last week . My Oral Surgeon and Endocrinologist were able to talk before the procedure , so , that eased some of my worries. I stopped taking Fosamax 2 weeks before my procedure and my Oral Surgeon advised me to remain off the Fosamax for another 4 to 6 weeks . So far I seem to be healing good and no issues . My Oral Surgeon told me that he’s had other patients on Fosamax and they never had any issues after surgery . Still, it’s good to do your own research, ask questions and be prepared . Thanks for checking on me 🥰
Hi Janetta! I'm really hoping that your dental work has gone smoothly. It sounds like your care team is on board with the potential risk for problems because of the medications you take for osteoporosis. Have a bright and happy day!
Hello Oniemae , Thank you so much for your kind and thorough response . It is truly appreciated ❤️.
I return to the Dentist next week for a completed Partial . I feel like my situation feels very similar to yours . My Endocrinologist wants me to be off Fosamax for 3 months , in case I need a extraction. My Dentist wanted to do my Partial first , he said it would be easier to adjust after future dental work . He said my Molar could be a Pandora’s box because he isn’t sure what I’ll need , an extraction or root canal . It’s starting to bother me a bit so I know I need to speak up now before it gets worse . My Dentist is an agreement with being off the Fosamax for awhile and I know he is concerned . So I guess I’ll know what direction I’m going in next week . I will keep you posted 😉
